Paper vs PLA vs Sugarcane Straws: Which Straw Suits Your Cold Cups
November 02, 2026

For most cold drink programs the practical answer is: paper for short drinks served within 30 minutes, PLA for drinks that sit longer or need a firmer straw, and sugarcane for a natural look with mid-range performance. The deciding factors are soak time, straw diameter against the lid slot, and what your market accepts as compostable.
This guide compares the three materials on the numbers that matter at the counter, then shows how to match diameter and length to 12, 16 and 22 oz cups.
Diameter and length: match the lid and the cup
A straw that is too narrow collapses under thick smoothies; one that is too wide will not fit the lid slot. Length should clear the lid by 45–60 mm without reaching the bottom of the cup, so the straw does not sit in the sediment.
| Straw OD | Best for | Lid slot | Typical length |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 mm | Water, soft drinks, iced tea | Standard 8 mm slot | 197 mm for 12 oz |
| 8 mm | Iced coffee, lemonade, soda | Standard or wide slot | 210 mm for 16 oz |
| 10 mm | Smoothies, frappes, boba without pearls | Wide slot | 230 mm for 22 oz |
| 12 mm | Boba, thick shakes, dessert drinks | Wide slot or dome opening | 230–260 mm |

How the three materials compare
Paper straws are three-ply glued and start to soften at the seam after roughly 30–45 minutes in a cold drink; they are the cheapest and the easiest to source in custom print. PLA straws are rigid, hold shape for several hours and look like plastic, but they need industrial composting to break down. Sugarcane straws sit between the two: firmer than paper, natural colour, and they tolerate about 60–90 minutes of soaking.
| Material | Stiffness | Working time in drink | Home compost | Cost index |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper, 3-ply | Medium | 30–45 min | Yes, breaks down | 1.0 |
| PLA | High | 3–4 hours | No, industrial only | 1.5–1.8 |
| Sugarcane fibre | Medium-high | 60–90 min | Partly, varies by supplier | 1.2–1.4 |
The claims problem
“Biodegradable” and “eco-friendly” mean different things in different markets. In the EU, single-use plastic straws are restricted and paper or reusable alternatives are the compliant route. In the US, several states and cities have their own rules, and “compostable” usually requires a certified industrial facility. Before printing a claim on a wrapper, confirm which standard your market recognises and keep the certificate on file.
We do not print unverified environmental claims. If a straw needs a claim, it should be backed by a test report or certification that names the material and the condition.
Switching checklist
• Confirm the lid slot width before choosing 10 mm or 12 mm straws.
• Test the straw in the actual drink, not water: pulp, ice and syrup change how a paper straw performs.
• Check the straw length against cup height so it does not touch the base.
• Ask for the soak test result and the material certificate, not just a spec sheet.
• Plan storage: paper straws absorb humidity, so keep cartons sealed and off the floor.
Frequently asked questions

Do paper straws really last only 30 minutes?
Quality varies widely. Three-ply straws with a well-bonded seam typically hold for 30–45 minutes in a cold drink; thin two-ply straws can soften in 15 minutes. Ask for a soak test rather than a claim.
Are PLA straws plastic-free?
PLA is a biobased polyester. It is not made from fossil feedstock in the usual sense, but it is still a polymer and needs industrial composting. Some markets classify it as plastic for regulatory purposes, so check local rules.
Can I print my logo on straws?
Yes, on paper straws and on wrapped straws. Printing directly on PLA is limited to a few colours, and sugarcane straws usually take a printed paper wrap instead.
What is the MOQ?
Custom printed paper straws typically start at 50,000 pieces; plain straws in stock colours can be ordered in smaller volumes. PLA and sugarcane have similar or higher minimums depending on diameter.
Tell us your cup sizes and lid slot width, and we will send a straw sample set with the matching diameters so you can test them in your own drinks.
